DAY 2 MORNING SESSION Thursday 11 March 2010
The first session of Day 2 was “Indigenous Traditional Knowledge and Sustainable Development.” It started with a prayer by two Kavalan elders, followed by two keynote speeches. Dr. Masegseg Z. Gadu (Paiwan,) Director of National Museum of Prehistory spoke about “Bridging Taiwan and Austronesian with Cultural Heritages.” Sylvia Feng, former President of Public Television Service (PTS) introduced PTS’s citizen journalism platform, PeoPo, and its influence during the aftermath of Typhoon Morakot. Tanya Denning from NITV spoke about how Australia’s Aboriginal people live by Sustainable Conservation. Dr. Panay Mulu (Amis,) Board Director of Indigenous Peoples Cultural Foundation introduced the relationship between Media and Pancah Rituals.
A panel on “Media, Climate Change and Indigenous Sustainability” was moderated by Lulama Mokhobom, former Executive of Public Broadcasting Services of SABC. Panelists included H. E. Ambassador Phillip K. Kabua of the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Etan Pavavalung (Paiwan,) Indigenous Arts & Culture Worker, Dr. Jolan Hsieh (Siraya,) Associate Professor for the Dept. of Ethnic Relations and Cultures of National Dong Hwa University. Jean LaRose and Masao Aki also shared their observations during the discussion.
DAY 2 AFTERNOON SESSION Thursday 11 March 2010
A skilled Paiwan flutist, Pailang Pavavalung opened the afternoon session with the performance of the traditional Paiwan instrument, nose flute. The afternoon session focused on “Exchange Mechanism within WITBN Framework.” Nils Johan Heatta, Director of NRK Sámi Radio presented Boundless Media Cooperation.
Jim Mather, Chief Executive of Māori Television shared the Vision for WITBN. During the speech, Mr. Mather acknowledged the success of two WITBN initiatives: Program Exchange Scheme and Indigenous Insight, the first international indigenous news program contributed by WITBN members. Assist. Professor Fu-Yueh Lin from National Dong Hwa University gave a presentation on the Initiator of Change: Media and Indigenous Peoples Social Change.
The afternoon session ended with a live panel hosted by Masao Aki, Chief Director of TITV. Discussants included CEOs of WITBN members as well as present guests and audience.
DAY 2 CLOSING CEREMONY Thursday 11 March 2010
The closing ceremony featured the traditional dance by the Rukai brought by Darumak Youth Group from the Rukai Tribe. The conference host Patagaw Talimalaw dressed in traditional Sámi attire to open the WITBC host organization handover ceremony.
