World Indigenous Television And Broadcasting Conference

FACING THE CHALLENGES IN THE DIGITAL AGE

The second World Indigenous Television Broadcasting Conference (WITBC ’10) was hosted by Taiwan Indigenous Television (TITV) / Public Television Services (PTS) – under the umbrella of the Taiwan Broadcasting System – in Taiwan from Wednesday March 10 to Friday March 12, 2010. The aim of the conference was to create opportunities for indigenous broadcasters to exchange views and experiences; and to encourage interaction and communication among indigenous media worldwide.

A special feature of WITBC ’10 was a Film Festival which showcased the wisdom of indigenous people and the preservation of a sustainable environment. WITBN Council members were invited to submit new films for the premiere screening.

The conference incorporated a Tribal Cultural Tour. This included a visit to Peinan Cultural Park; a tree-planting ceremony to celebrate Taiwan Arbor Day on March 12; a visit to Nanwang Village and the ‘palakuwan’ of the Puyuma Tribe, which is the youth meeting hall for males and the cultural centre of the tribe; and a tour of the east coast tribes including a visit to the Sa Pu Ru tribe of Taitung to experience the Austronesian culture of Taiwan.
