Issue-18-outlook-witbc12logo-1-wNRK Sápmi, formerly NRK Sámi Radio, of the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation will host the third World Indigenous Television Broadcasting Conference (WITBC ’12) in March 2012. The theme of WITBC ’12 is ”Indigenous Journalism” and the vision is “Unifying wisdom – sharing content.” NRK Sápmi hopes this conference will generate interest and inspiration for an Indigenous cooperation that improves the quality and method content is delivered to the public.

“We hope that the third international Indigenous media gathering will draw attention on Indigenous journalism and strengthen the cooperation among Indigenous broadcasters,” said Nils Johan Heatta, NRK Sápmi Chief Director. “We believe that the conference in 2012 will give Indigenous media a possibility to come together and share, as the vision states: ‘Unifying wisdom - sharing content.’”

NRK Sápmi hopes to deliver the followings to event participants:
-  new knowledge and inspiration for developing TV productions for Indigenous peoples around the world
-  strengthen the cooperation through networking and building relationships
-  a memorable and fantastic experience of the magic of Sápmi

NRK Sápmi released the conference logo in late 2010. The chromatic logo is designed in a geometric figure to symbolize aurorae, the northern polar light, and the rising sun. The logo demonstrates the positive spirit of the Indigenous world.

“Sápmi WITBC ’12 is now in a process where we are moving on to develop the professional content for the conference. The aim is to create a gathering that brings the Indigenous media world; new knowledge, inspiration and excitement for the power of networking for the benefit of strengthening I ndigenous media,” says Katarina påve, the coordinator of WITBC ’12.

The conference will be held in “Diehtosiida” (building of science), located in Guovdageaidnu in the middle of Sápmi. Diehtosiida is a new building where five Sámi government institutions are housed under the same roof: Indigenous rights Gáldu, World reindeer herders association, a sub department of the Sámi parliament, Sámi archives, and the Sámi University College.

Sámi University College will be one of main partners contributing the professional content for the theme of WITBC ’12. Sámi University College has a bachelor study in journalism with a concentration on a Sámi/indigenous perspective and is also developing a master study in Sámi journalism.
