National Indigenous TV (NITV) celebrated its fourth anniversary on July 13, acknowledging its achievements since 2007.
Four years ago, NITV became Australia’s only channel dedicated to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and its culture. Since then, the station has commissioned more than 1,000 hours of programming from the Indigenous production sector. In 2011, NITV launched the first half-hour Indigenous News Service in Australia. Its sports programs, such as Barefoot Rugby Show and Marngrook Footy Show are among the highest ranked, for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
NITV’s production, Go Lingo is the first Indigenous production to be a finalist in the 2011 Australian Subscription Television and Radio Association Awards.
